New North Bennet Street School | 2012
the joint as concept
The North Bennet Street School emphasizes a hands on approach to traditional crafts such as furniture making, carpentry, and locksmithing, with a pedagogical goal to help students establish professional careers in such trades.
This project asks for the design of permanent and temporary housing units and a craft school, based programmatically on the North Bennet Street School.
Understanding the tectonic qualities and the craft behind making a simple joint leads to a way of merging an existing structure in the center of the site to the new construction surrounding it. The craft school is placed in the existing building and acts asthe “key” of the joint - holding together the housing components.
Education should seamlessly integrate individuals into society. To facilitate this, students move further away from the school as they progress through their education, until they leave the school to join the community.
